Below is an update regarding the 2020 SID Annual Meeting…
Dear SID Community:
As you know the SID has postponed its May 2020 Annual Meeting. After a number of conversations, and assessment of the trend for COVID-19, the decision has been made not to attempt a physical face-to-face meeting this year. Alternatively, we are now investigating the feasibility of sharing content online through a virtual meeting format.
We are still in the nascent stages of looking at various options and enabling technology platforms. We will keep you informed on progress in the coming weeks with a proposed plan. We also will very soon announce how we will address items pertaining to the cancelled meeting (i.e. registration fees, abstract publication…).
Thank you for your patience during these uncertain times. We appreciate your commitment to the SID and look forward to continued service to you and the community.
Status Update on the SID 2020 Annual Meeting
Thank you for your patience and understanding while SID leadership has closely monitored the COVID- 19 (Coronavirus) situation as it has evolved over the past weeks. After thoughtful deliberation to serve the urgent needs of our membership, and minimize the negative impact to the SID, we are now able to officially postpone the May 2020 SID Annual Meeting.
The decision to not have our meeting this May was made with great regret, but the health, safety and well-being of the global dermatologic community is our highest priority. Recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding cancellation of events with group gatherings of ten (10) people or more, announcements by the World Health Organization (WHO) declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic, various state Stay-in-Place orders, the United States President declaration of a national emergency, numerous university and institutional travel restrictions and ever-increasing numbers of confirmed cases all provide a clear need to take this action. Many of our members also have urgent needs to respond to local COVID-19 emergencies. The combination of these factors has made it impossible to hold the meeting in May.
Please look for additional communications from us in the following weeks that will provide further details on next steps. We continue to work through an enormous amount of details in closing down and potentially rescheduling the meeting this Fall. We will soon communicate about registration fees, abstract publications, and ask for your input on how you would like to see these move forward. You may have also received (or will be receiving communication from the Westin Kierland) regarding your hotel reservation. Please be sure to check for that comm.unication or reach out to the Westin Kierland directly (480/624-1000 or via toll-free reservation center 800/354-5892) to remove your reservation.
We are grateful to everyone who has worked tirelessly with the planning of 2020 SID Annual Meeting … including the members of the Committee on Scientific Programs, the Committee on Education, and the administrative staff.
We ask for your patience as we work diligently to address questions and provide additional information to all who are impacted by this decision.
The 2020 Society for Investigative Dermatology (SID) Annual Meeting is scheduled to take place, as planned, May 13-16, 2020, in Scottsdale, Arizona. We have heard from attendees that they are committed to attend the SID Meeting and we thank them for their continued engagement. SID Leadership and Management respects the decision of those who decide to cancel their participation and look forward to seeing them in the future.
“Due to the COVID-19 (also known as coronavirus) outbreak, the SID is closely monitoring the ongoing potential impact for our attendees, exhibitors, and hotel staff, said Ponciano Cruz, Jr., MD, President. “We are reviewing the guidelines from worldwide health organizations and other experts and are committed to taking appropriate precautions to provide a safe and healthy environment for attendees.”
The SID understands that individuals who have been in China (originating or visiting) or other countries may be unable to participate in-person at the SID Annual Meeting due to travel restrictions barring access to the U.S. The SID will continue to support attendees based in various countries on their final decisions, and we thank them for their continued engagement.
The U.S. Government has taken steps to mitigate the concerns regarding COVID-19. This includes (effective in early February) suspending entry of any foreign national who has been to China within the past 14 days. Please reference links below for more information.
The SID will:
- Follow recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the policies of the local government and city officials
- Identify local medical facilities that will be able to promptly care for attendees that may require immediate treatment
The SID is also planning to implement additional onsite tools for registrants, exhibitors and onsite personnel, including, but not limited to, the following:
- Increased availability of hand-sanitizing stations
- Partnering with the Westin Kierland for increased cleaning and disinfection process across all high-volume touchpoints (catering areas, surfaces, handrails, restrooms, entrances/exits, touchscreens, etc.) along with the use of cleaning/sanitizing materials and products
- Having an on-site medical support plan in place
- Awareness campaign via online and onsite information and signage
- Create an environment to promote a ‘touch-free’ exhibition and conference:
- Communicating the adoption of a ‘no-handshake policy’
- Reduce/eliminate business card exchanges
- Attendees: We encourage you to utilize available technologies like the SID mobile app, AirDrop or other available services to share contact information.
We strongly urge exhibitors and attendees to implement appropriate guidelines and protocols as suggested by the CDC/WHO and other health authorities. The SID will endeavor to provide a safe and healthy environment for all attendees.
